I would also recommend that you get a USB-based adapter, rather than a PCIe adapter, even though a PCIe adapter theoretically gives you better performance - which you'll be able to measure if you're an electrical engineer with proper testing tools. You don't have to buy their very newest, fanciest (and thus expensive) WiFi adapter, unless you have their newest and fanciest router, and you want to take full advantage of that router's capabilities. Know that the adapter's manufacturer is going to point their finger at the router manufacturer, and the router manufacturer is going to. If you use somebody else's adapter, and something goes wrong, you just That way, you're using an adapter that was designed to work with your router. My recommendation is that your new WiFi adapter should be made by the same company that made your router.
Have the legal right to mess with somebody else's intellectual property. It doesn't have the manufacturer's insider knowledge of the device, but even if it did (industrial espionage, anyone?) Microsoft doesn't Not that it doesn't want to, mind you, it just can't.
